African Cichlids (Pronounced Sick-lids) originate from the Great African Rift Lakes. Those most commonly available are from Lake Malawi & Lake Tanganyika. These are beautiful & interesting fish, but not generally suitable to be housed with community freshwater tropical fish, this is due to the specific water requirements of African Rift Lake Cichlids & also their temperament.
Their preference is for "Hard water" with a high pH and high mineral content, this is easy to reproduce, however not always tolerated by other species. African cichlids are also territorial in nature and are best housed with fish of a similar size & temperament.
